135 artists take part in spring show

The Ann Arbor National Spring Art Show tomorrow and Sunday features works by 135 artists.

"It's kind of a hybrid between an art gallery and an art festival," said Linda Ashley, spokesman for the show. In the event's two previous years, the indoor show has been relaxed, with good lighting, tasty food, wide aisles, and recorded music, she said.

Two dozen Ohio artists will be among those selling their wares, including sculptor Benjamin Carruth of Toledo and glass maker Scott Boyd of Sylvania.

Bead work, sculpture, painting, fiber, glass, ceramics, furniture, photography, and whimsical pieces are among the genres represented. Vendors include Ann Arbor jewelry makers John and Scott Berry, who fashion gold and precious stones into contemporary settings, Ashley said. She added that Jim and Tim Harkenrider of Milford, Mich., will sell their colorful glass.

Most of the artists live in Michigan, Ohio, and nearby states.

The show is produced by Akron-area watercolorist Ron Beahn, who also produces an October show in Ann Arbor, and a large arts festival at the Boston Mills Ski Resort southeast of Cleveland, which is spread over two weekends in late June and early July, Beahn said.

The Ann Arbor National Spring Art Show takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the University of Michigan Indoor Track Building behind Yost Arena, on State Street two miles north of I-94 Exit 177.
