Abstract show opens in Spectrum Gallery

Spectrum Gallery in Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Dr., presents its 2004 Abstract Show through Sept. 3. Show juror is Diana Attie, a mixed media artist, art professor at the University of Toledo, and gallery director for the Center for Visual Arts. Spectrum hours are noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Information: 419-531-7769.

Toledo Bead, 436 13th St., has announced its schedule for classes offered through the end of the year. Classes offered include twisted wire bangle bracelets, chandelier earrings, floral beads, wire charms, glass blowing paperweights, bead making, crocheted ropes, Byzantine chains, and more. Diva restaurant, 329 North Huron St., has mounted the exhibit Fragments, a collection of paintings by George Hughes, a painting professor at the University of Oklahoma; it will remain on display through September. Hughes moved to America from Ghana in 1994, earned a master of fine art degree in painting from Bowling Green State University, and taught at the University of Toledo s Center for Visual Art. Flatlanders Art Galleries, 11993 East US 223, Blissfield, presents In Relation to the Whole, a solo exhibition of ceramic sculpture by John Leyland on view through Sept. 17. The artist s work has been inspired by the artifacts of Neolithic cultures and the archaeological information passed on through those items. Leyland is the ceramics studio coordinator of the University of Michigan s school of art and design. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Friends of African and African-American Art of the Detroit Institute of Arts presents its Bal African 2004 Gala beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday in the DIA, 5200 Woodward Ave. Detroit.
