Photo club opening national exhibition
1/12/2006The Toledo Friends of Photography's 2006 National Juried Photography Exhibition opens tomorrow in the University of Toledo Center for Visual Arts Gallery, 620 Grove Pl., adjacent to the Toledo Museum of Art. Photographer Kathy Vargas of San Antonio considered more than 600 images from about 145 artists and selected 70 images from 35 artists for the exhibition that runs through Feb. 10. Vargas is scheduled to present a slide lecture of her work at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Little Theater of the Toledo Museum of Art, 2445 Monroe St. After the presentation, she will announce the exhibition award winners, and a reception will follow in the CVA, where gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday-Saturday.
The Perrysburg Area Arts Council, 134 West South Boundary St., Suite T, Perrysburg, holds its open house and annual meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, which is Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. Children are welcome and can take part in hands-on art activities celebrating King's ideals. The Perrysburg High School Jazz Band will perform under the direction of Scott Schleuter. Space 237, 237 North Michigan St., will present RE: Surface, an art exhibition judged by Chicago artist M.M. Robinson, Jan. 21 through Feb. 24. The display features work by Chicago and New York artists ATYL, Christa Holka, David Luke, M.M. Robinson, and Hidemi Sato. A reception is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 21. Sandusky Cultural Center, 2130 Hayes Ave., Sandusky, presents Purple on view through Feb. 12. The display, which explores artwork in various shades of purple, comprises works by 16 artists including Diane Chevalier, Erik Flesher, Barbara and Josh Haplea, George Kocar, Patricia Mayer, Yianni Pagalos, Matthew Ritter, and Mark Sudduth. Spectrum Gallery at Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Dr., presents an exhibition of works by Clayton Peterson from his Crossing Aaron's Field series. The artist's oil paintings, on view through Jan. 28, use theatrical images of origami cranes and masked figures painted in saturated colors to convey emotional responses to autobiographical events. Peterson, who studied the Flemish technique of Jan van Eyck in France, studied at the School of Art at Bowling Green State University. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday.
