Area Artists Exhibition to open in museum

The Toledo Museum of Art, 2445 Monroe St., will open the 88th annual Toledo Area Artists Exhibition with an awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. July 28 in the museum's Great Gallery. The exhibit, which will be displayed in the Canaday Gallery through Sept. 3, features juried works by 92 artists from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Information: 419-255-8000.

Spectrum Galleries presents the 16th annual Salon des Refuses' Exhibition in Parkwood Gallery, 1838 Parkwood Ave., July 28 through Aug. 23. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. July 28. Local painter Merv Russell will teach a pastels workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. July 20 in the W.W. Knight Preserve building, 25930 White Rd., Perrysburg. The workshop costs $15 but is free for Perrysburg Artist Club members. Registration: 419-873-2787.

The Riverbend Arts Festival will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Riverbend Recreation Area, 11168 TR 208, just east of Findlay. The festival will feature art, music, and food, with a special 2:30 p.m. performance and workshop by the Japanese Takio Drummers. The festival is free to the public. Saline Mills Studios is hosting a two-day altered arts conference tomorrow-Saturday in the Best Western, 2900 Jackson Rd., Ann Arbor. Altered art is a form that uses any existing object to create new work.
