Industrial drawings to be on display at Owens
6/14/2007The Art of Industry, examining the span from conceptual drawing to assembly line, looks at both form and function in the manufacturing process. It opens Monday and continues through Aug. 2 in the Walter E. Terhune Gallery in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Owens Community College, 30335 Oregon Rd., Perrysburg. A public reception will be 6 to 8 p.m. June 22.
A kickoff event will be held at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Toledo Museum of Art to begin a series of free curator-led gallery experiences that coincide with WGTE Public Broadcasting's premiere of Simon Schama's Power of Art. The eight-part weekly TV series begins at 9 p.m. Monday with programs on Van Gogh and Picasso and continues at 10 p.m. each Monday through July. The series explores the lives and works of the artists. Curators will lead tours through the museum during the time the series runs.
Nicholas Edens won $500 in the Smithsonian magazine's fourth annual photo contest. The West Toledo man used a Canon 350 digital camera to photograph a white lion standing on a rock at the Toledo Zoo in August. He made modest alterations, darkening the edges and softening the overall image. Winning in the category "altered images," Edens' photo was one of six winners from a field of 8,447 entries. It is printed in the June issue of the magazine and will be exhibited at the Smithsonian Castle July 1 to Aug. 15.
Winners of the Toledo Artists' Club's Youth and Upcoming Artist show are, in the high school category, Michael Connelly, first; James Fisher, second, and Jeshua Schuster, third. Honorable mentions went to Matt Benedict, Stephanie Davis, Rochelle Voyles, and Steve Watson. In the under-30 category, Salvatore Schiciano won first; Juliet Foraker, second, and Helen Grubb, third. Honorable mentions went to Shannon Bauerschmidt, Kelly Cousins, Mandy Hensley, and Kirsty Wilson. An exhibit of these and dozens more entries in this fee-free show continues through June 28 at the club in Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Dr.
The Collingwood Arts Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd., is hosting two exhibits through July 1. The work of portrait artist Lisa Bell, who works under the name Lisabelle, is in the Lobby Gallery of the center. The combined works of artists Dianne S. Trabbic and Ellie Miller are featured in the B-Wing Gallery. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
The photographs of Jason Tetzloff will be featured at the University of Findlay's 1124 Gallery through Aug. 10. Transitions: Works in Progress includes traditional and digital photographs and pieces that combine film-based photography with digital printing. Tetzloff has been a newspaper photographer and is chairman of arts and sciences at Owens Community College in Findlay, where he directs the First Year Experience program. Several area sculptors are among 27 whose work is displayed in the Art 'Round Town exhibit in downtown Saugatuck, Mich. The exhibit, continuing through April, 2008, includes work by Calvin Babich, Mike Barker, Robert Garcia, Jim Havens, Tom Lingeman, Mike Sohikian, Karl Steavenson, and Ken Thompson.
