Galleries, studios open for Third Thursday
6/19/2008Arts Zone Third Thursday Art Walk is 7 to 10 tonight. It's a new monthly arts happening scheduled to be repeated July 17 and Aug. 21. Tonight's walk features four galleries and 20 artist studios.

Firenation, the art-glass studio of Matt Paskiet, will have its summer open house from 7 to 10 p.m. tomorrow. Refreshments and glass-blowing demonstrations are planned for the evening at 7166 Front St., Holland. One of Paskiet's works, Spider Vessel, is on display through Sunday in the Ohio Designer Craftsmen's Best of 2008 show in the Ohio Craft Museum, 1665 West Fifth Ave., Columbus. The show moves to the Springfield Museum of Art in Springfield from June 28 to Aug. 23, then to the French Art Colony in Gallipolis from Sept. 5 to Oct. 26. Information: 419-866-6288.
Toledo Botanical Garden seeks memories, stories, photos, and anecdotes about TBG for a project by Carol Tyler, the garden's artist in residence through June 30. Tyler, a cartoonist, will speak with adults and children about TBG's history and what the park means to the community. She'll pull together a finished story using words and illustrations that will be displayed through the summer. Two shows at the Collingwood Arts Center open this week. Subtle Authenticity features Luna Pier artist Catherine Kopiwoda. The exhibit, which will open with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m. tomorrow, displays her oil, stained glass, sculpture, and pen and ink work. It continues through Aug. 2.
In the exhibit called Urban Disconnect, artists explore privacy, community, and disconnection. The reception is 5 to 10 p.m. today. The center is 2413 Collingwood Blvd. Information: 419-244-2787.
Debbie Toepfer and Jim Hauter of the Service Spring Corp. created the winning poster in a Designing for Literacy competition organized by the Advertising Club of Toledo. Club members were challenged to create posters that would help recruit volunteer tutors for Read For Literacy and increase awareness of low literacy and illiteracy. The winning poster combined an image of a book and a growing plant along with the words, "Plant a New Chapter."
The Blue Heron Gallery will present black and white images by photographer Michael Walker during the month of July. Opening reception for this and an exhibit in the adjacent MJ Erard Gallery will be 7 to 9 p.m. July 11 with music by the Ed Levy Jazz Duo.
Also in the Oliver House, the Erard Gallery will show the colorful artwork of two West Coast artists July 1 to Aug. 22. Joachim McMillan, born in Grenada and living in Portland, Ore., will show his expressionistic, Caribbean-flavored paintings. The art glass of David Patterson of Tacoma, Wash., includes vibrant, multi-colored round and egg-shaped sculptures. The galleries are in the Oliver House at 27 Broadway. Information: 419-389-0385.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is returning more than 900 pieces to 19 renovated galleries on the
second floor of its historic 1916 museum building, with public celebrations June 29. The works, from the museum's permanent collection, have been in storage since 2005 when the museum closed for renovation. California as Muse: The Art of Arthur & Lucia Mathews opens at the Akron Art Museum Saturday through Sept. 7. Its 67 pieces includes elaborately carved frames, furniture, decorative pieces, and paintings and drawings by Arthur and Lucia Mathews and their contemporaries. They met in 1893 in San Francisco and became a rare combination for the time - a married couple working together as equals in art. They fused turn-of-the-century European influences such as Art Nouveau and the ideals of the international Arts and Crafts movement, with their California setting. Information: 330-376-9185.
