Galleries await visitors tonight
7/17/2008The Third Thursday Art Walk will be 7 to 10 tonight in the Warehouse District on the south end of downtown. The nine participating galleries and studios will offer locator maps. In addition, a representative of Art Assist, the Lucas County program that provides low-interest loans ($500 to $2,500) for purchasing local art, will be available to explain the program.
Open will be the MMK Gallery at 20 North St. Clair St.; 20 North Gallery at 18 North St. Clair St.; Sur St. Clair at 1 South St. Clair St.; and sculptor Jack Wilson's studio on 19 South St. Clair St. Studio 356 at 356 Morris St. and a temporary gallery at 48 South St. Clair St. will have displays. The Blue Heron and MJ Erard galleries are in the Oliver House, 27 Broadway St. Also, many studio doors will be open in the Secor Building, 425 Jefferson Ave. The next Art Walk, Aug. 21, will dovetail with the twice-yearly Meet and Greet event for local creatives. Art on the Mall will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 27 in the heart of the University of Toledo's main campus. More than 100 artists will sell a variety of work at the 16th annual event on Centennial Mall, which is free. Children's activities and live music will be offered through the day. An opening reception for new exhibits in the Community Gallery at the Toledo Museum of Art will be 6 to 8 p.m. July 25.
Opening tomorrow through Oct. 5 in the museum's Gallery 18 is NOVA (New Species): Paintings by Isabella Kirkland. An artist and taxidermist, Kirkland's life-sized plant and animal paintings concentrate on recently discovered species.
Also in the museum, Robert Workman will discuss the innovative 100,000-square-foot American arts museum being built in Bentonville, Ark., at 7:30 p.m. July 25 in the Little Theater. He's executive director of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, expected to debut in 2010. Built in a wooded area around natural springs, its patron is Alice Walton, daughter of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton.
A mixed-media workshop including painting, drawing, and collage techniques will be taught by Laura McCreery Jordan Aug. 12-14. Fee for the sessions, limited to 20 people and sponsored by the Toledo Artist Club at Toledo Botanical Garden, is $250. Information: 419-531-4079.
The Greater Ann Arbor Quilt Guild presents its annual show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 26 and 27 at Washtenaw Community College in the Morris Lawrence Building, 4800 East Huron River Dr., Ann Arbor. The 300-quilt show includes special exhibits such as antique quilts from Julie Hacala's collection, quilts of East Africa, storybook quilts, vendors, and demonstrations. The University of Findlay has named Jeff Salisbury deputy director of the Mazza Museum of International Art from Picture Books. A photography instructor at UF since 1999, Salisbury will also work as director of the Lea Gallery and continue as an instructor.
Also at UF, 33 whimsical portraits of dogs, created by dozens of contemporary artists, are displayed at the Lea Gallery through Aug. 8. The illustrations appear in Speak: Children's Book Illustrators Brag About Their Dogs, edited by Michael J. Rosen. The book was created to benefit the Mazza Museum. The gallery is in the Virginia B. The winning entries in the Bowling Green Postcard Series Competition will be on display through July at Arts in Common Gallery, 437 South Main St., Bowling Green. Subsequently, they'll be on permanent exhibit in the town's city hall. Information: 419-352-3761.
