Works in fiber to go on display at MMK

The handiwork of 25 fiber artists will be featured at Cadeaux de Fibre (Gifts of Fiber) Nov. 24 to Jan. 3 in the MMK Gallery, 20 North St. Clair St. Opening gala will be 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 2, featuring guitar music by Tim Oehlers and refreshments, including crepes. A third of the purchase price of each item sold will be donated to a charity of the artist's choice. Participants include Kate Day, Ellen Kluz, Wendy Jenkins, Mary Lehr, Steve Wipfli, Frances Parry, Denise Domanski, Ellen Leonard, Mary Pat Peltier, Lois Morgan, Anne French, Jan Poll, Mary Lee Grabowski, Susan Cayton, Diane Dippold, Carol Roberts, Ann Stickler, and members of the Toledo Knitters' Guild. Three galleries in Holland will host an evening of art enhanced by refreshments, a wine tasting, and individualized creative gifts. Dan Dailey of Massachusetts is guest artist at the Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion. He will demonstrate glass-making at 2 p.m. Nov. 20 and speak about his 35 years of creating art around the world (chandeliers, sculpture, vessels, sconces, and architectural projects) at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 in the pavilion. Dailey and his daughter, Allison MacNeil Dailey, collaborated on Glassigator, a 36-page children's book about the glassblowing process created last year for the museum. In the 1990s, Dailey blew dozens of expressionistic animal vases, including the piece that inspired the book.

A juried show of work by University of Toledo students will run Nov. 23 through Jan. 4 in the Center for Visual Arts Gallery, adjacent to the Toledo Museum of Art. A reception and awards ceremony will be 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 5.

Free supplies for teachers are offered by Scrap4Art, 1501 Adams St., which collects and redistributes goods such as paper, canvases, fabric, matte board, frames, plastic bottles, and jugs. Call for artists: Sittin' Pretty in Sylvania will result in artistically rendered, wooden benches being displayed throughout Sylvania and the township in the spring. Dec. 1 is the deadline for submitting drawings. The project is led by the Sylvania Community Arts Commission and the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce. A 90-year retrospective showcasing the best local art will open Nov. 21 and continue through Feb. 15 in the Toledo School for the Arts, 333 14th St. The show was curated by students working with staff from the Toledo Museum of Art. Displayed are some of the award-winners purchased annually by the Toledo Federation of Art Societies at the Toledo Area Artists' Exhibition.

Collages, watercolors, pencil drawings, landscapes, and other media are displayed and for sale at Georgette's Grounds and Gifts, 311 Conant St., Maumee. A percentage of sales will be donated to Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio, which serves people who have developmental disabilities. The shop is open from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

People and Portrait, featuring 47 portraits by 25 artists, continues at the Toledo Artists' Club through Nov. 27. During the upcoming Heralding the Holidays weekend, Dec. 5-7, many of the club's 340 members will sell their wares. The club is in Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Rd.

Between Stillness and Motion is Debra Davis' topic for an ARTalk at 6 p.m. Monday in 1101 Fine Arts Center at Bowling Green State University. A new-media artist, Davis is professor and chairman of the University of Toledo's art department. She earned master's degrees in instructional technology and media production from Northern Illinois University and in art/photography from the University of Colorado.
