Artomatic 419! will feature work of 200 artists
4/16/2009Artomatic 419!, featuring the work of 200 seasoned and emerging artists and continuous musical and spoken-word entertainment, opens Saturday and continues on April 25 and May 2. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day. It's the third time the free event has been produced by the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo.

Modern and contemporary pieces recently acquired by the Toledo Museum of Art will be discussed by Amy Gilman, associate curator, at 7 p.m. April 24 in the museum's Libbey Court. The same evening, 7 to 10, in the museum's Glass Pavilion, Julia and Robin Rogers will create from glass an anthropomorphic child holding a rabbit.

Mixed-media artist Jacqueline Sullivan will lead the first of five all-day workshops sponsored by the Toledo Artists' Club, May 4 to 7 in the club at 5403 Elmer Drive. She'll teach about building a painting by layers, including tissue paper, miscellaneous acrylics, household items, and metallic foils and paints. The cost is $275. Registration deadline is April 25.

The Toledo Glass & Ceramic Award will be presented to Delbert E. Day, the evening of April 23 at The Toledo Club by the Michigan/NW Ohio Section of The American Ceramic Society. Day will give a talk on Glass: From Outer Space to Inner Space. He is the author or coauthor of 318 technical publications and has edited three technical books. Day is the curators' professor emeritus of ceramic engineering and the senior research investigator at the Graduate Center for Materials Research at the University of Missouri-Rolla. He holds 44 U.S. and foreign patents on glasses for biological applications, glass microspheres, sealing glasses, dental materials, transparent composites, and high-temperature ceramics. Mary McNamara's watercolor, acrylic, and mixed-media prints are displayed through April 20 at Pam's Corner restaurant, 116 10th St.

Colorful Kazuri beads, a fair-trade product made from fine clay and painted by Kenyan women, are at Bonita Bead Boutique April 24 and 25, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Also displayed at the shop through April 30 are vintage Lucite, silver, and gold beads from the 1960s to the 1980s. Paintings with highly molded surfaces and deep lines by Doug Fiely of Stryker are displayed at the Perrysburg Municipal Courthouse, 300 Walnut St., through May 12.

A Hungarian-Tanzanian-American Friendship Night and exhibition will be April 23, featuring the textile art of Emilia Pacsika from Szeged, Hungary, 11 young artists from Tanzania who are visiting Toledo as part of an exchange program and their art, and a presentation by a group of Toledo-area artists who visited Tanzania earlier this year. Artitude, a free celebration of the arts, will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the Tiffin Mall. Retail stores will feature music, artwork, and hands-on projects. A community mural will be painted, movies by local film makers will be shown, the Tiffin University Crew dance ensemble will give hip-hop workshops, Chinese cultural works will be displayed, and an original miniature-golf course will be open for play.

Chris Giftos, retired chief floral designer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will speak at 11 a.m. in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
