10 galleries, studios take part in Art Walks

The 2009 series of Third Thursday Art Walks will begin 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday with 10 participating galleries and studios in the Warehouse District. New to downtown is the Ford Gallery, a co-op, holding its grand opening with a party from 6 to 11 p.m. that day. Founded by Cynthia Ford, it will display the work of emerging artists, age 16 through adult. It's at 222 North Erie St. Also participating will be the Secor Studios, MMK Gallery, 20 North Gallery, Sur St. Clair, the studio of Jack Wilson, the Little Gallery, South Wing Gallery, Olive Street Studios, and Studio 356. Maps with information about each venue will be available at each of the stops along the walk.

Subsequent Third Thursday Art Walks will be June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, and Sept. 17. Third Thursdays are sponsored by the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo. Information: 419-254-2787 and acgt.org.

The Darlington, Krohn, Ulrich Exhibition will be on display through May 29 at the Parkwood Gallery, 1838 Parkwood Ave., Suite 120 off Monroe Street in downtown Toledo. Scott Darlington resurrects childhood toys with his skilled glass blowing and sense of humor. The imaginative doodles of Darlene Krohn are a portal into a colorful fantasy world. Leslie Ulrich creates pattern quilts and beach ball-shaped forms out of paper grocery bags.

A reception with the artists will be held May 29 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Swan Creek Potters has scheduled its annual pottery sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 5737 Weckerly Rd., Whitehouse. Represented in the sale, which features pottery that costs $25 or less, will be works from Rita Malkin, Maggie Trzcinski, Joyce Donahue, Fran Kline, Julie Beutler, Kelly Averill Savino, and Kathleen Gill-Slee. Peggy Brennan Grant, 20 North Gallery art director, will give a talk Saturday tied to that day's running of the Preakness Stakes horse race.

During her 2 p.m. talk entitled "All the King's Horses," she will share stories of her recent trip to Saudi Arabia and her tour of the royal stables of the Saudi king.

Guests will be able to view the gallery's 9th Annual Derby Days exhibition featuring equine art by 13 local artists. The gallery is at 18 North St. Clair St., and the regular hours are Tuesday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
