Word Play opens at TMA

Words mixed into a visual stew make up Word Play, opening tomorrow through Feb. 7 in Gallery 18 at the Toledo Museum of Art. Museum staff selected 50 works from the permanent collection that incorporate text into LED signs, paintings, prints, Xeroxed pages, and books by artists including Jenny Holzer, John Giorno, Jim Dine, Louise Bourgeois, and Robert Rauschenberg,

The Poetic Dialogue opens with a joint reception, 7 to 10 p.m. tomorrow, with Contemporary India, in the Fine Arts Center Galleries at Bowling Green State University.

The Poetic Dialogue project was organized by artist Beth Shadur and features the creative collaborations of 31 artist-poet pairs. A touring exhibition, it continues through Nov. 19. Shadur and her collaborator, poet Lois Roma-Deeley, will demonstrate their work at 7:30 tonight in the Prout Chapel and tomorrow at 9 p.m. in Grounds for Thought coffee shop, 174 South Main St. in Bowling Green. They'll also lead a public workshop, 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday in the Wood County District Public Library, 251 North Main St., Bowling Green. Preregistration is required at galleries@bgsu.edu.

Contemporary India, through Nov. 13, is a multimedia exhibit of work by 10 artists from India or of Indian origin. Common threads are the influences of Westernization and technology on Indian art, as well as tradition and modernity. It was curated by faculty member Shaurya Kumar. At 6 p.m. tomorrow, Anupam Sud, an intaglio printmaker, will speak about her career in 115 Olscamp Hall, followed by an Indian dance performance.

Renowned photographer Dave LaBelle will give a free talk at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Room 132 of the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Owens Community College. Author of I Don't Want to Know All the Technical Stuff, I Just Want to Shoot Pictures and other books, he'll discuss his TLC method: timing, light, and composition. The California resident has been a newspaper and magazine photographer and has taught photojournalism.

Penny Gentieu's photographs, Nadine Saylor's glass, and Amanda Stark's sculptures are at the Parkwood Gallery through Nov. 20. An open reception will be 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 23. The gallery is at 1838 Parkwood Ave. near the Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion.

Art and poetry by 15 contributors will be displayed at hallway showcases of the Maumee Public Library, 501 River Rd., Monday through Nov. 30. The exhibit is coordinated by Prizm Creative Community.

Avedon: Fashion Photographs 1944-2000 will open Sunday and continue through Jan. 17 in the Detroit Institute of Arts. A ticketed event, it features 181 works, beginning with Richard Avedon's early work at Harper's Bazaar magazine where he was hired in 1944 at the age of 21. It includes vintage prints, magazines, contact sheets, and other archival material from the Avedon estate.

Figure, Fantasy, Fauna: Mosaics and Prints highlights the works of Beth Holyoke and Sherraid Scott in the Diane Kidd Gallery at Tiffin University. It opens with a 6:30 to 8 p.m. reception Oct. 22, at which the artists will discuss their work.
