Free activities at Toledo Museum of Art include lecture, concert

Several free events at the Toledo Museum of Art are coming up, including Friday's 7:30 p.m. illustrated lecture about the Nile Valley's landscapes and monuments, and the antiquities of Islamic Cairo, by Carolyn and Dick Putney in the Little Theater.

A 3 p.m. concert Sunday entitled Here I Come to Save the Day!, keyed off the LitGraphic exhibit, will feature singers, dancers, and musicians in the Great Gallery.

Cirque De Verre, a lively troupe of glass-blowing entertainers, performs from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Glass Pavilion. Seating is limited. Also Oct. 30, artist Peter Kuper speaks at 7:30 in the Little Theater about Thinking Outside the Box: The Possibilities of Graphic Novels.

Halloween activities include Mystery in the Museum tours (7 p.m. Oct. 23; 2 p.m. Oct. 24; 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Oct. 25; 7 p.m. Oct. 30, and 2 p.m. Oct. 31) beginning in Libbey Court).

Mystery in the Cloister is a short, all-ages comedy at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Cloister.

Reservations are required for Night in the Museum: After-Hours Flashlight Tour at 10 p.m. Oct. 30 ($10). Call 419-254-5771, ext. 7448.

For children, galleries will have costumed characters re-creating works of art and a map to find special places, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 31.

Call for artists: The Parkwood Gallery is accepting submissions from local visual artists for the 2010 gallery season. Deadline is Wednesday. Download a prospectus at acgt.org or call 419-254-2787.

Scrap4Art's upcoming workshops include cigar-box art ($30), 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 4 and 11, and recycled jean tote bag ($10), 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 14. Additional Girl Scout workshops are planned. Shared Visions, at 20 North Gallery through Oct. 31, displays painting, collage, jewelry, prints, and multi-media pieces by people working at Lott Industries' Shared Lives Studio. The gallery is at 18 North St. Clair St.

Art from the workshop at Sunshine Vocational Center is on view at Georgette's Grounds & Gifts through Oct. 31. The shop celebrates its fourth anniversary with music by singer-songwriter Aaron Valdiviez 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow. Georgette's is also offering a 25 percent discount on goods in the gift shop tomorrow and Saturday. The shop is at 311 Conant St., Maumee.
