Art museum to screen Parks' film

A free screening of Shaft will be at 7 p.m. March 19 in the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art. Tammy Kinsey, associate professor of film at the University of Toledo and a filmmaker, will introduce the 1971 movie and discuss the career of its late director, Gordon Parks.

An exhibit of Parks' photographs is in the museum's Canaday Gallery through April 25.

Also at the museum, Ancient Rome is the topic of free talks by three experts on March 20 in the Little Theater. At 11 a.m., Racing Death: Ancient Roman Children's Sarcophagi and the Circus Maximus will be discussed by Sandra Knudsen, associate curator of ancient art. At 1:30 p.m., Women, the Circus, and the Defense of Rome will be presented by Carin M.C. Green, professor and chairman of the classics department at the University of Iowa. And at 2:30 p.m., Fans, Fame, and the Roman Circus, will be the topic for Sinclair Bell, professor of art history at Northern Illinois University.

The Power of Women! exhibition will open tomorrow with a 7 to 10 p.m. reception in the Collingwood Arts Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. The exhibit continues through April 12.

The Mix 2010 will be 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. March 20 in the Secor Building at Jefferson and Superior streets. It will feature gourmet food, a cash bar, live entertainment, and a silent auction of art. The party is the spring fund-raiser for the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo. Tickets, $75, must be purchased in advance. Information: 419-254-2787.

The Toledo Artists' Club's 49th Art Auction will be at 7:30 p.m. March 20 at Gladieux Meadows, 4480 Heatherdowns Blvd. Cocktails (cash bar) and preview begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be door prizes and a raffle for a water color by Ernest Spring. Admission will be $2. Information: 419-874-8779.

Marcia Derse's hand-dyed and painted fabric constructions will be hung in the South Wing Gallery at the Oliver House, 27 Broadway, on Friday and Saturday evenings through March.
