Arts and more at Lourdes College Women's History Month event

Lourdes College hosts the free W.A.V.E. Festival from noon to 5 p.m. March 27 in the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center. Music and dance will be performed by Kyle White, Spectrum, Liz & Brandon, Aegela Dance Company, Sweet Harmony, Estar & Corey, and Rosie. Jewelry, ceramics, fiber arts, painting, and ceramics by about 50 crafters, along with refreshments, will be sold in this celebration of Women's History Month. A reception for Barton, Makar and Weiss will be 6 to 8 p.m. March 26 in the Parkwood Gallery, 1838 Parkwood Ave. at Monroe Street, across from the Toledo Museum of Art. The exhibit will open Monday and run through April 30.

The Perrysburg Area Arts Council has placed the work of five artists throughout Perrysburg through April for its Art in Public Places program. Barns of Wood County, painted by Tamra Mielke, are in the Perrysburg Municipal Courthouse. Bowling Green artist Joan McKee's works on shaped wooden panels, including trompe l'oeil paintings that give the impression of looking out a window, are at the Perrysburg Municipal Building, as are nature-themed works on paper by Janet Ritter Davies. Glass pieces in a collection dubbed Fire Apple Series by Matthew Paskiet are in the Way Public Library. And Ron Tiller of Maumee melds op-art with surrealism in drawings of the female form, at Flying Joe Coffee House at Levis Commons. Information: 419-873-2787.

Nature photography by Jean Schoen is featured at Downtown Latte coffee shop, 44 South St. Clair St., through the end of the month. A reception will be at noon Saturday.

A workshop in making decorative corded pillows will be 6 p.m. April 8 in Scrap4Art, 1501 Adams St. Cost is $15. Another workshop, making personalized wrapping paper with custom stamps, will be 1:30 p.m. April 17 ($10, for ages 10 through adult). Information: 419-720-2978.

Laura Barnhardt Corle will teach an eight-week watercolor class at the Findlay Art League, 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays beginning March 18. Cost is $85 plus supplies. Corle paints in a photo-realistic style. The league is at 117 West Crawford St. in Findlay. Registration: 419 423-6729.

Also at the league, "Photo 28," the annual juried contest, continues through March 27.

The 48th Ann Arbor Film Festival will show 170 films from 20 countries from March 23 to 28 at venues in downtown Ann Arbor. Among the highlights: experimental hip-hop artist Flying Lotus will premier a live musical score for the 1957 avant-garde animation classic, Heaven & Earth Magic, at 7 p.m. March 26 in the Michigan Theater.

Naomi Uman will show films from her personal documentaries exploring life in a Ukrainian village in Ukrainian Time Machine.

British Nicky Hamlyn, author of Film Art Phenomena, a survey of experimental film and video, will present a selection of his silent 16mm experimental films. New avant-garde films and experimental documentaries from London-based distributor, LUX, will be shown, and Benjamin Cook, LUX executive director, will speak.

From Montreal, Daniel Barrow will demonstrate manual animation combining overhead-lamp projection with video, music, and live narration. Barrow's Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry is the story of a garbage man who has a vision of creating an independent phone book chronicling the lives of each person in his city. Art, Anti-Art, Non-Art: Experiments in the Public Sphere in Postwar Japan, 1950 - 1970 opens March 27 through June 6 in the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Also at the museum is an exploration of art's intersection with culture and technology by Cory Arcangel through April 11; the work of Chang Ku-nien, a practitioner of the ancient tradition of Chinese painting, through April 18, and contemporary art from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection, through May 2.
