Funny little faces, about two inches high, are among the collection of more than 200 netsuke (NET-skeh) displayed Oct. 1 through Feb. 27 at the Toledo Museum of Art. Life in Miniature: Ceramic Netsuke from the Silverman Collection, will be in Gallery 18. Made of ceramic and other materials, netsuke were fastened at the waist of the pocketless kimonos worn by Japanese men between about 1615 and 1868. To them were attached silk cords on which purses hung.

At 7:30 p.m. Oct. 1, Japanese art historian Laura J. Mueller will discuss the intriguing knobs at the Little Theater. She authored the new book, Adornment in Clay: Ceramic Netsuke from the Richard Silverman Collection.

Docents will lead tours of this exhibit at 6:30 and

7 p.m. Oct. 1, at 2 and 3 p.m. Oct. 2, and at 3 p.m. Oct. 3.

Upcoming workshops at the Toledo Artists' Club will be watercolor painting on yupo (fee: $250), 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, taught by Sandy Maudlin, and oil painting (fee: $350) with Robert Warren, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 13 to 16. The fledgling Waterville Area Arts Council will host a silent auction at Saturday's Roche de Boeuf Festival in Waterville. Items by more than a dozen artists will be at the council's booth on Farnsworth Road, and proceeds will support the group. Information: 419-441-0025.

It's off to the races for the Collingwood Arts Center, celebrating its 25th anniversary with a fund-raiser at Raceway Park, 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 25. Tickets are $40 each and $70 per couple and include a buffet-style dinner, dessert, two drinks, a $5 betting voucher, official racing program, score card, and betting guide. Toledoans Jose Martinez and Jose Trevino will show their Chicano and environmental art through the end of the month at La Galeria de Las Americas, 1222-24 Broadway St. Martinez is a self-taught muralist and painter. Opening reception for 100@100: 100 Works of Art by Alumni Artists to Celebrate Bowling Green State University's Centennial, will open with an 8 p.m. reception Oct. 1 at the Bryan Gallery in the Fine Arts Center building in Bowling Green. Included are works by Namu Cho, jeweler and metalsmith from Maryland; painter Paul Beel, of Florence, Italy; San Francisco jeweler and metalsmith Marilyn DaSilva; Chicago graphic designer Rick Valicenti.
