Quilt show, competition July 15-16 at Lourdes

The Glass City Quilt Commission will host the Kaleidoscope of Quilts XV Show and Competition July 15-16 in the Franciscan Theatre and Center of Lourdes College in Sylvania. In addition to a show of more than 200 quilts, there will be miniclasses, lectures, a merchant mall, special displays, and an Iron Quilter competition in which members of three quilt guilds will battle it out Iron Chef-style from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 15. With entertaining live commentary and cheered on by the audience, the competitors will be given mystery "ingredients" and race to create quilts under pressure.

The best of show bed quilt will receive a $500 prize and a kaleidoscope; the wall quilt judged best will earn a $250 prize. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 15 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16. Adult admission is $5 for one day and $8 for a two-day pass. Admission is $2 for ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and younger. Information: gcqc.org.

'Three Cottages,' a watercolor by Tom Nachtman. Works by Nachtman and Neil Frankenhauser are on view through July 31 at Vino 100, 3355 Briarfield Blvd., Maumee.

Mentor in the Mirror, paintings by Neil Frankenhauser and Tom Nachtman, are at Vino 100 through July 31. Nachtman, of Bedford Township, is a student and painting buddy of Frankenhauser, of West Toledo. Mostly created along the Maumee River near Sidecut Metropark, the works are in oil, watercolors, and mixed media. A reception with the artists will be 6 to 9 p.m. July 20. Vino 100 is at 3355 Briarfield Blvd. in Maumee.

A publishing and illustration workshop will be 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 12-14 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16 in the Way Library, 101 East Indiana St., Perrysburg. Meet Me at TMA, a free program for people who have mild memory loss and their companions, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Toledo Museum of Art. The topic will be It's Greek to Me, based on stories and characters painted on Greek vases. Next month, the program will be at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 6, when the topic will be garden scenes in the museum. A tour of Frank Stella: Irregular Polygons led by museum director Brian Kennedy will be at 7 p.m. July 15 in the Canaday Gallery. The Stella exhibit will close July 24.

Egypt in Toledo: The Ancient Egyptian Collection at the Toledo Museum of Art, is newly published and for sale in the Museum Store and at tmastore.org. It's written by William H. Peck, former curator of ancient art at the Detroit Institute of Arts, with Sandra E. Knudsen, former associate curator of ancient and African art at the Toledo museum, and Paula Reich, curatorial projects and publications manager at the Toledo museum. In paperback and indexed, it sells for $24.95. Egyptian antiquities have been in the museum's collection since 1906 when Edward Drummond Libbey and Florence Scott Libbey shipped 11 crates of artifacts they'd purchased in Cairo to Toledo.

A reception for Holly Hey and her multimedia exhibition, Burning the Maples, will be 6 to 11 p.m. July 16 in the first-floor gallery of the Secor Building, 425 Jefferson Ave. Branches hang from the ceiling and protrude from the walls of the gallery, and video images project in super-slow motion. Hey is an assistant professor of film and video production at the University of Toledo. The work is an homage to her late father, Don Hey, who loved cutting wood and the outdoors. In the Itsy, Bitsy, Teeny, Weeny Art Exhibit, Art Gallery 49 will display acrylic tole paintings by Jan Heckenlively, polymer clay works by Rhonda Peters, and acrylic wildlife paintings by Steve Fish, July 19 through Aug. 19 in the gallery at 102 Michigan St., Reading, Mich.
