Salon show opens arms to art exhibition's rejects

The annual Salon des Refuses seeks work by artists that was rejected from the 2011 Toledo Area Artists' Exhibition. Reduced entry fee for the Salon is possible through Saturday for applications made at myprizm.com. Participants also can enter by bringing their art work along with a copy of their rejection email or "uninvited" page from the Call for Entry Web site, to the Parkwood Gallery, 1838 Parkwood Ave., on Aug. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Information: 419-872-8730.

That romanticized greasy spoon -- the diner -- will be the subject of the 2011-12 academic year's first exhibit in the Terhune Gallery at Owens Community College. Open Aug. 16 through Sept. 16, it will include 50 pieces that rekindle memories of a bygone era: sculptures, photographs, paintings, and poetic restaurant menus. Contributors are Valerie Escobedo, Marianna Hofer, Jim Ross, Shellee Graham, Jerry Berta, Vic Vicini, and John Miller.

Opening reception for ScientficAmericanArtist: The Art of Richard W. Hanson will be 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 18 at 20 North Gallery. Hanson is a self-taught artist and professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland who studies the interface between molecular genetics and metabolic regulation. This solo exhibit will continue through Oct. 1. The gallery is at 18 North St. Clair St. Information: 20northgallery.net.

The seventh annual Levis Commons Fine Art Fair will be Aug. 20-21 in the Town Center at Levis Commons. More than 125 people will be selling their work in this free open-air event, presented by the Guild of Artists & Artisans. The Toledo School of the Arts will present a children's art activity center. Reservations for An Evening with the Jurors, Tasteful Temptations and Conversations, 6:30 to 10 p.m. Aug. 19 in the Glass Pavilion of the Toledo Museum of Art, will be accepted until Monday. In previous years, it was called the Jury Dinner and precedes the Toledo Area Artists' Exhibition, opening the evening of Aug. 26. Tickets are $35. Information: 419-255-4321.

The Collingwood Arts Center features the pop art of Carl Oxley III and his fellow Detroit-area creatives Tim Gralewski and Taurus Burns through Aug. 31. The center is at 2413 Colllingwood Blvd.

In a show opening Sunday simply called 18, the Angelwood Gallery will highlight work by many regional potters who use a variety of styles and firing methods to make cups, plates, casseroles, serving pieces, pitchers, and bowls. There's also new jewelry, art glass, photography, fiber art, and paintings. Continuing through Oct. 15, the show celebrates the shop's 18th anniversary. It's at 24195 Front St. in Grand Rapids, Ohio.
