Museum tours will feature art of mothers

Nate Masternak's 'Tastes Like California' is part of a show at Akimbo Gallery opening May 18.

Upcoming at the Toledo Museum of Art:

● Free docent-led tours for Tender as a Mother's Heart, featuring art of mothers from various cultures and periods, will be at 7 and 8 p.m. Friday; 2 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tours will start in Libbey Court.

● Glass-making demos by Larry Zengel and Bret Young, of the Bowling Green studio Hot House Glass, will be 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Glass Pavilion.

● Jamestown & Glassmaking: The First Industry in English North America, will be discussed by Karen Rehm, chief historian at Colonial National Historical Park in Virginia, at 7:30 p.m. May 18 in the Little Theater. Glass was made in Virginia as early as 1608.

● From Sand to Glass, a program in conjunction with Oak Openings Preserve Metropark, will be noon to 6 p.m. May 19, beginning with a nature walk and presentation at Oak Openings, followed at 2:30 p.m. by a tour of the Glass Pavilion, a glass-making demo, and the chance for participants to create a glass flower. The first Art Walk of the season is 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, when galleries, studios, and eateries will be open to visitors in the Warehouse District and Uptown District. Information and maps: 419-254-2787 and acgt.org.

A reception for artists who designed 10 creative bike racks recently installed in the Uptown District will be 5 to 6:30 p.m. May 16 at Manhattan's, 1516 Adams St. The project was funded by Toledo's One Percent for Art program administered by the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo. Better Living Through Synergy, an exhibit of paintings by Nate Masternak, will open with a 6 to 8 p.m. May 18 reception featuring live music and refreshments, and will continue through June 14 at Akimbo Gallery, 175 N. Main St., Bowling Green, inside the Squeaker's Cafe building. Information: 419-806-9116.

Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Schedel Arboretum & Gardens will host a Meet-the-Artist event, featuring many of the people who make the jewelry, pottery, purses, steel work, origami, and clay-leaf impressions sold in the onsite gift shop. Among the artists will be Jan Pugh of Packer Creek Pottery in Genoa. Kids can create a keepsake for their moms. On Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., mothers will be admitted for free in honor of Mother's Day. In addition to garden tours, a dozen quilts made by members of the Quilt Foundry Guild will be displayed in the Brown Welcome Center through Oct. 31. The 17-acre garden is at 19255 W. The Gilded Age of Haviland China (circa 1865 to 1895), runs May 15 through Sept. 16 in the Hayes Museum at the Hayes Presidential Center, Spiegel Grove, Fremont. Hayes: Buckeye President, in the Thompson Library, Room 165, 1858 Neil Ave., Columbus. It details Hayes' life and his role in creating the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, precursor of Ohio State University.
