Gallery invites public to celebrate its 20th anniversary

The public is invited to a 6 to 9 p.m. reception Friday celebrating the 20th anniversary of 20 North Gallery at 18 N. St. Clair St. There will be refreshments, music, and at 7 p.m., a short ceremony. The current show, ending Saturday, features paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, glass, jewelry, and photography by 20 artists who have exhibited there over the years. Displayed will be work by Michael Sheets (the first to exhibit here in 1992), Leslie Adams, Kimberly Arden, Mike Basista, Aaron S. Bivins, Michelle Carlson, Wil Clay, Steven Conine, Joe Ann Cousino, Adam Grant, Peggy Grant, Philip Hazard, Skot Horn, Tom McGlauchlin, Elaine Mikel, Kelly Sheehan, Joseph Sheppard, Mike Sohikian, Bruce Works, and David J. Want to say you've been exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art? It's a distinct possibility, even for those of us who can't draw a straight line (which used to be a measure of sorts for one's artistic talent.) For an autumnal portrait-palooza when the museum will launch several portrait-themed exhibits, up to 600 people will have their mugs photographed and hung. They'll be displayed in Museum People: Faces of TMA that will be hung salon style (floor to ceiling) in Gallery 1 from Sept. 28 to Jan. 10. Photos of individuals will be taken for free, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 1 in Libbey Court; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2 in the Glass Pavilion, and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 14 in the Family Center on the lower level of the main museum.

● June 1 is the deadline for application to participate in the Black Swamp Arts Festival's Wood County Invitational Art Show. People living within a 30-mile radius of Bowling Green and working in all media may apply at no cost. Those accepted will be charged a booth fee of $130 for the event on Sept. 8-9 during the Black Swamp Arts Festival. Patti Smith: Camera Solo, comprises more than 60 black-and-white gelatin-silver prints taken with a vintage Polaroid camera. It runs June 1 through Sept. 2 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Smith has been a pioneering musician, poet, author, and artist over the last 40 years. Her subjects range from unvarnished portraits of herself and her children to symbolic portraits such as photographer Robert Mapplethorpe's slippers. Her images are infused with personal significance and possess the same unfiltered, emotional quality as does her poetry and song lyrics. Smith began taking 35-mm photographs in 1968 and took up the Polaroid Land camera in 1995.
