McGlauchlin works to highlight Hot Glass

Hot Glass 2012 opens with a 6 to 8 p.m. public reception Friday in the lobby of the Edison Building, 300 Madison at North St. Clair Street, and concludes with a gala auction June 28. The exhibit features more than 100 pieces by many internationally known glass artists and can be viewed 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; also from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. June 15, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 16.

All pieces are for sale and can also be seen and purchased online at theartscommission.org. Among these shining beauties are 21 created by the late Tom McGlauchlin, donated by his wife, Pat McGlauchlin, with proceeds earmarked for youth art programs.

Tickets for the June 28 gala are $45. Held every-other year to raise money for the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, the 2010 event generated $100,000 for the commission and remunerated artists more than $65,000 for their pieces. Information: 419-254-2787.

Maple and Main Art Fair, a new event, will feature select artists along the streets of historic Sylvania, live music, and food for purchase from local restaurants, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. At Toledo Museum of Art:

• People who have mild dementia and their caregivers are invited to a docent-led tour of 19th-century furniture and decorative objects at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The pieces that will be viewed are similar to what could have been found in the elegant homes of the nearby Old West End, which is having its annual festival Saturday and Sunday. • Revelation: Major Paintings by Jules Olitski, an abstract painter who used intense colors, opens today and continues through Aug. 26 in Canaday Gallery. A 22-minute documentary film about the artist who died in 2007 will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Little Gallery, followed by a discussion with Olitsky’s widow and daughter, as well as the exhibit’s curator from the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. A related event will be at 2 p.m. June 9 in the Little Theater, where museum director Brain Kennedy will speak on the history of abstract art and lead a tour of the show.

• Through Labor Day, active-duty military personnel and their families can receive discounted deals at 1,500 museums and cultural attractions across the country as part of the Blue Star Families program organized by the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the U.S. Department of Defense. At the Toledo museum, eligible people will receive a token for free parking and a 10 percent discount in the gift shop, upon showing identification. •A Glass Masters symposium will be the evening of June 8 when distinguished glass artists will share their experiences. In the Glass Pavilion’s GlasSalon at 6 will be Cappy Thompson; Lucio Bubacco and Diego Botticin at 7, and Fritz Dreisbach and Jeff Mack at 8.

A second round of talks will be June 22: Richard Whiteley at 6 p.m., Bandhu Scott Dunham at 7, and Martin Janecky and Gary Schwartz at 8.
