Glass Gala will aid Arts Commission

Hot Glass 2012 Gala, a party and auction supporting the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, will be 6:30 to 10 tonight in the lobby of the Edison Building, 300 Madison Ave. at N. St. Clair Street. 'Melancholy Woman' by Pablo Picaso is part of a show through Aug. 19 at the Detroit Institute of Arts featuring some of Spain's most important artist.

Work by seven members of the Slippery Weasel Society, a Detroit-area collective, continues through Sept. 8 at Flatlanders Art Galleries in Blissfield, Mich. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 14, the gallery will host a free family-oriented Weasel Camp with crafts, games, an aluminum pour, live music, and refreshments. Work ranges from dolls and photo realism to relief paintings, and participants include Jeanne Bieri, Carl G. Butler, Mary Fortuna, Matthew Hanna, Andrew Krieger, Faina Lerman, and Alison Wong. Opening Sunday at the Cleveland Museum of Art is Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties, featuring 130 photographs, sculptures, and paintings by more than 60 artists who explored a new realism in the years between World War I and the Great Depression. Picasso and Matisse: The DIA's Prints and Drawings, opens July 11 and runs through Jan. 6 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Also at the DIA is Five Spanish Masterpieces through Aug. 19, including Portrait of the Matador Pedro Romero by Francisco de Goya; The Holy Family with St. Anne and the Infant St. John the Baptist by El Greco; Soft Construction with Boiled Beans by Salvador Dali; Portrait of a Man by Diego Velazquez, and Melancholy Woman by Pablo Picasso. A Guide to Pottery and the Arts in Zanesville-Muskingum County and Southeast Ohio includes a primer on the area's clay, historical background, and maps of pottery, antiques, and art-related attractions. It's available for free by calling 800-743-2303 (the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce). High-quality clay was abundant in this southern Ohio region where pottery-making flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries, including at companies such as Roseville, Weller, and McCoy.
