Downtown gallery to show works celebrating dance

Works by Toledo native Robert Heindel, reminiscent of Degas' dancers, will be on view in Sur St. Clair Gallery at 1 S. St. Clair St. next week.

The Amazing Art of Robert Heindel, a Toledo native known for his paintings of dancers that are reminiscent of Degas, will open with a 5 to 7 p.m. reception Wednesday for which tickets are $20. The show, in Sur St. Clair Gallery at 1 S. St. Clair St., can be viewed from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, and July 20 for a $5 admission.

Born in 1938 and a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Heindel's passion for capturing dance in oils, pastels, and conte crayon was inspired when he attended a ballet in Detroit starring Rudolph Nureyev and MargotFonteyn. He visited ballet and contemporary dance companies throughout Europe, Japan, and the United States, taking hundreds of photographs at classes and rehearsals.

He was also commissioned to paint impressions from the musicals Cats and Phantom of the Opera by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. In addition to his paintings, his proofs will be sold.

Amy Gilman, curator of contemporary art at the Toledo Museum of Art, will discuss the paintings of Jules Olitski and related modern paintings owned by the museum at 7:30 p.m. July 20 in the Little Theater.

The NOW WOW PROJECT, II is open to artists in all media except video. Winners will share $1,000 in prizes and receive a solo show Oct. 13 to Nov. 10 in Hudson Gallery, 5645 N. Main St., Sylvania. The biennial Hot Glass auction for the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo raised $59,700, with an additional $7,000 in donations to the Young Artists at Work summer program. Also, $16,000 was raised from the sale of glass work by the late Tom McGlauchlin to be spent on youth arts programs at the Toledo School for the Arts and the arts commission, said Jennifer Jarrett, deputy director of the commission. The numbers are down from the 2010 auction, which raised $84,000 and $23,000 for the Young Artists at Work, Jarrett said.

The Sand to Sea installation at the Wassenberg Art Center in Van Wert has been canceled because of storm damage and power outages. It will be rescheduled for 2013. The exhibit would have featured work by Judith Greavu and Matthew J. Paskiet.
