Arts center will open with reception Friday

Over 40 pieces of metal artwork ranging from abstract to the figurative, including Todd Kime's artistic welding expression, are being showcased at the Owens Center for Fine and Performing Arts.
A 5 to 9 p.m. reception Friday, with appetizers and music, will feature the artists and teachers of INPROCESS, which provides space for a variety of classes and for artists to sell their wares. INPROCESS is in the Great Eastern Shopping Center, 2662 Woodville Rd. Information: 419-721-9467.

A series of outdoor installations and performances with the theme of "shelter" will open with a reception and performances, 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, in the Stranahan Arboretum, 4131 Tantara Rd. Temporary works made for specific sites in this outdoor show examine the ways in which "shelter" can be interpreted. It's a project of 11 University of Toledo students. The show continues through Oct. 14.

When Hollywood Had Glamour will be discussed by Karen Sinsheimer of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art at 3 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Little Theater of the Toledo Museum of Art. She organized Made in Hollywood, a ticketed exhibit of 90 studio photos of film stars shot between the 1920s to 1950s, that will open in the museum Oct. 7 through Jan. 20.

Rick Valicenti, winner of the 2011 National Design Award in Communication Design, will speak at 5 p.m. Oct. 8 about his exhibit, Curiosities: Rick Valicenti and the 21st Century Thirst, showing Oct. 8 through Nov. 11 in the Willard Wankelman Gallery. Valicenti, a designer and founder of Thirst/Chicago, will speak about the previous decade of his work that emphasizes collaboration and balance, in the Donnell Theatre in the new Wolfe Center. It will be followed at 6:30 p.m. by a reception in the nearby Wankelman Gallery. Information: 419-372-8525.

An Introduction to Oriental Rugs will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in Ten Thousand Villages in Archbold. More than 300 beautiful Oriental-style rugs, hand-knotted by people in Pakistan and ranging in size from 2-feet-by-3-feet to 10-feet-by-14-feet, will be at the shop Oct. 3-6. A lunch with Yousaf Chaman, who has worked with the Fair Trade Rug Program for 19 years and is the son of the man who started it, will be in the store at 12:30 p.m. Monday, when lunch will be available to guests. Chaman works with the artisans, who are paid fair compensation for their labor. From intricate florals to hand-spun natural-dye wool tribals, every rug has been designed and hand-knotted by the 850 families in 100 villages who do the work.

John Running-Johnson and Lee Doezema create in media ranging from wood and steel to large-scale paintings. An exhibit of their work continues through Nov. 17 in Flatlanders Art Galleries, 11993 E.
