Art museum to showcase host of events on Manet
10/10/2012The Toledo Museum of Art’s exhibit of the work of Edouard Manet will be accompanied by a number of related events.
The exhibit, Manet: Portraying Life runs until Jan. 1. Admission is $8 for ages 23 to 64; $5 for others, and free for children 5 and younger. Information: 419-255-8000 and toledomuseum.org.
Here’s a rundown of the related programs:
Manet Programs
● Thursday, 6 p.m., in the Peristyle: Gary Tinterow, director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (and a 28-year veteran of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York) will discuss Manet’s love of Spanish art. Free.
● Oct. 26, 7:30 p.m., in the Little Theater: Richard Putney, a professor of art history at the University of Toledo, will give an illustrated lecture on Paris in the time of Manet, an era of artistic, political, artistic, and topographic transformation.
Manet’s Paris, a free film series in the Little Theater
● Gervaise; 8 p.m. Friday. Set in 19th century Paris and based on the novel L’Assommoir by Emile Zola, Gerviase chronicles the struggles of a laundry girl determined to improve her lot in life. (1956, 114 min., French with subtitles.)
● Edouard Manet, A Disturbing Strangeness, 8 p.m. Oct. 19. An exuberant film documenting Manet and his world. (2011, 52 min., French with subtitles.)
● Madame Bovary, 8 p.m. Nov. 9. The provocative title character explores her passions. (1949, 115 min., by Vincent Minnelli.)
● Nana, 8 p.m. Dec. 14. Rich with late-19th century detail, Nana (also the title of a Manet portrait of a fetching woman in undergarments) is a Parisian coquette pursued by two brothers. Based on the novel by Emile Zola. (1934, 87 min.).
Tours (tickets are required)
Larry Nichols, who co-organized the show, will lead tours Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 18 at 2 p.m.
Docents will lead tours at 2 p.m. Saturday, and Oct. 21 and 27; Nov. 4, 10, 18, 24; Dec. 2, 8, 22. Additional docent tours will be at 7 p.m. Fridays on Oct. 26, Nov. 2, 16, 23, 30; Dec. 7 and 21.
