Museum celebrates 'Artoberfest' with music, beer, tours

Beer meets art from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 18 at Artoberfest at the Toledo Museum of Art, organized by Circle 2445, a group of young professionals who support the museum. The event will include sample beers as well as a cash bar, hors d'oeuvres with a Franco-German theme, and music by Jack and the Bear. Also offered will be tours of exhibitions Manet: Portraying Life and Made in Hollywood. Advance tickets are $25 for nonmembers/$15 for members; at the door, an additional $5 will be charged. All Questions No Answers, a solo exhibit by Jefferson Nelson, will open with a 7 p.m. reception Oct. 19 in Bozarts Gallery and Studio. The exhibit will highlight 10 years' worth of sculpture, painting, printmaking, and installation. Music will be performed by 33⅓. Call for artists:

● A fashion-design contest, deadline Oct. 20, will have three categories: Sci-fi/Fantasy, Theater/Film, and Ready to Wear. Thirty designs will be selected to be created for presentation at An Evening with Vin Burnham: A Fashion Extravaganza at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Pinnacle in Maumee. Burnham is a renowned designer for theater and film. The entry fee is $25 and all ages may participate. Prizes for students pursuing degrees in fashion design will include scholarships. Prizm Creative Community invites members and friends to its annual general meeting and workshops, 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, in the Owens Community College Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Room 111. Highlights include annual reports, two workshops, and the unveiling of the 2013 PRIZM creative challenge, "Call for Colors." Workshops are $10 for nonmembers. The first will feature Laura Jajko of American Frame, discussing how to prepare high-quality digital files for printing and use of high-resolution digital images for giclee printing on substrates such as paper, canvas, Plexiglas, and aluminum. A second workshop will be presented by Condessa Croninger, art director at 20 North Gallery, who will explain how people can prepare for professional gallery representation. A show of work by Kalamazoo, Mich., artists John Running-Johnson and Lee Doezema continues through Nov. 17 at Flatlanders Art Galleries. Running-Johnson's sculptures are carved and built from wood and steel, usually painted, and are humorous. He pokes fun at bureaucracy with his sculpture Pulse in which 84 small, carved figures appear to look at the viewer with hopelessness. Doezema's large-scale multiple-part paintings study the human condition with broad brush strokes and unusual perspectives. The gallery will host a Fall Bash, 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 27, with music by Jaded Soul. Visitors are encouraged to bring nonperishable foods, canned goods, and toiletries for a food pantry.
