Music stars’ photographer to discuss his work

Photographer Baron Wolman will speak at 7 p.m. March 21 about his work in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts at Owens Community College. The free evening includes a live rock-and-roll performance by MAD 45, followed by a film, The History of Rock n’ Roll: Episode 6, Plugging In.

Wolman took pictures for Rolling Stone magazine in its earliest years. An exhibit of his work continues through March 28 in the Walter E. Terhune Gallery in the lobby of the center. It includes music-related artifacts and collectibles from the 1880s through the 1980s, ranging from record albums and posters to period clothing and concert tickets. Pottery classes for adults and children begin March 25 at the Toledo Potters’ Guild at Toledo Botanical Garden. Adult classes meet for 10 weeks and cost $187. A children’s session is two hours on Wednesdays after school for 10 weeks and costs $172.

Variations in Clay: Sculptures by Duane Bastian of Adrian will open with a meet-the-artist reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the American Gallery, 6600 Sylvania Ave. Bastian has been a potter for 55 years. His work will continue on view through April 30. Information: 419-882-8949.

Kenwyn Crichlow, one of Trinidad and Tobago’s leading contemporary artists, will be the keynote speaker for Bowling Green State University’s annual Africana Studies Research Conference on Friday, part of his nine-day residency at the university. 

His talk, “Claiming Identity: Claiming the Caribbean in 20th Century Art,” will be presented during the noon lunch. Crichlow is an abstract artist reimagining the Caribbean aesthetic through its connection with Africa, its diaspora, and contemporary art. A prolific artist and scholar, he exhibits throughout the world and teaches at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad. A Teen Digital Collage Contest, open to teens in grades 6 through 12, seeks entries for an art contest organized by the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. 

Students are asked to create a collage using five photo images depicting one or more of the following themes: Fur, Feathers, and Fins; High Tech, Low Tech; Your Favorite Library Spot; Reader, and Wheels. Images can be original photos or copyright-free photos on the Web. 

Deadline is 5:30 p.m. April 6. One entry per person. Awards will be based on artistry, creativity, and interpretation of the themes used. Call for artists: Submissions for the Toledo Digitial Billboards Art Project will be accepted until March 25. The ongoing project will utilize two digital billboards, owned by Toledo Detroit Outdoor Media, to exhibit art with the intent of beautifying the City of Toledo.
