Lourdes presents fine arts, crafts fest on Saturday

Work by Julia LaBay is featured in a solo show opening Friday at Launch Pad Cooperative, 911 Jefferson Ave.
WAVE: Women, Artists, Visionaries, Entrepreneurs, a free event featuring 65 vendors, will be Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Franciscan Center Commons at Lourdes University. In its sixth year, this is an indoor exhibition and sale of fine arts and crafts. Live music will be performed between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Lourdes is at 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. A reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday will open COMPROMI$ED, the intricate drawings of Sam Barton, in LeSo Gallery. Barton provides commentary on the integrity of contemporary mainstream hip-hop and its relationship to value and values. He will speak at a closing reception, 7 to 9 p.m. on April 5. Open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., LeSo Gallery is at 1527 Starr Ave. Parking is available along Starr and across the street at the Toledo Sports Center.

A pair of events will take place at the Toledo Museum of Art this week. On Friday, Jutta-Annette Page, curator of glass and decorative arts, will discuss how temperature causes fissures and breaks in glass in a Winterlude Gallery talk from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion.
On Sunday at 2 p.m., visitors can learn about the reinstallation of the new Wolfe Gallery for Contemporary Art. Highlights include newly acquired works by Maya Lin and Petah Coyne, and works by Jennifer Bartlett and Jenny Holzer that have not been seen in several years. Amy Gilman, associate director and curator of modern and contemporary art, will present the talk. Meet in Libbey Court.

Cocoon, a solo show by Julia LaBay, opens Friday in the Launch Pad Cooperative. A reception will be 6 to 9 p.m. on March 29, and the display will continue through April 19. LaBay creates metaphorical interpretations relating to insect behavior. Her sculpture is paired here with the poetry of Courtney Fillion. Established in 2012, the artist-run gallery at 911 Jefferson Ave., is open by appointment. Information: launchpadcooperative.com.

Baron Wolman, first staff photographer for Rolling Stone magazine, will speak at 7 tonight in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Owens Community College. Rock On, with 30 of Wolman’s images of musical greats, continues through March 28 in the center’s Terhune Gallery, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with extended hours to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. April 1 is the deadline to apply for a booth at Art in the Park in Tecumseh, Mich. Fifty spaces are available for this juried show that will be June 8-9 in Smith Park. Organized by the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Florencia Pita/FP mod explores the provocations and intersections of digital technology, material experimentation, femininity, and ornament in the work of Florencia Pita, an Argentina-born, Los Angeles-based architect and designer. The exhibit traces the evolution of Pita’s design ideology through installation pieces (including a new work commissioned by UMMA), urban design, tableware, furniture, and architecture, as well as small adornments.
Pita’s boldly colored works draw from literary, art, and biological sources; employ cutting-edge architectural fabrication techniques; and cross borders of visual art, architecture, and design. It continues through June 16.
