Toledo comedians featured in ‘Rustbelt’

Nothing says funny like the Midwest, according to a group of up-and-coming and mostly Toledo comics, who are spotlighting the region’s comedy scene in an upcoming DVD.

Hashtag Rustbelt will feature filmed performances of 10 local and regional stand-ups Wednesday and April 24 at Connxtions Comedy Club, 5319 Heatherdowns, as a DVD to be released this summer. Featured comics for Wednesday’s taping are Keith Bergman, Stu McCallister, D.K. Hamilton, Steve Wherry, and Erik Cribley. The April 24 lineup is Owen Thomas, Mike Szar, Dustin Meadows, Anthony Martinez, and Thom Brush.

Tickets to the shows are $8, or $4 with a valid student ID. Reservations are suggested; call 419-867-9041.

“Stand-up comedy is in the middle of a renaissance right now,” Hashtag Rustbelt creator Bergman said. “But what many people don’t know is that there’s a vibrant comedy underground right in their own back yard. The people you’ll be seeing on TV in the next few years are getting their chops right now playing clubs and small rooms right here in Ohio and around the Midwest.”
