A new photo exhibition telling the story of people who deal with hunger on a daily basis opens Friday at the Toledo Museum of Art. Community members were led through a series of workshops on how fine art and journalistic photography can communicate powerful messages. The exhibition, titled Witness to Hunger, was photographed and juried by local residents. It will be displayed in the Community Gallery until Aug. 9.

Also at the museum, on Friday, visiting artist April Surgent will conduct a free presentation at 6 p.m. at the GlasSalon. The Seattle-based glass artist will discuss her week-long Guest Artist Pavilion Project residency and talk about engraving and cold-working techniques used to shape and manipulate glass. She will be working from 10 to 5 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion Hotshop, which is open to the public. Surgent studied at the Australian National University in Canberra. In 2009, she received a Neddy Fellowship from the Tacoma Art Museum and the New Talent Award through Urban Glass. Most recently, she was awarded the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artist Fellowship.
