Exhibit features artworks with ‘skewed angle’

Addendum to Zilch (A to Z) is a mixed-media show by Steven J. Athanas in Flatlanders Art Galleries in Blissfield, Mich. It will continue through Sept. 7. “My perspective, I feel, is more of a nontraditional one, in that I’m always trying to see things from that skewed angle. In taking this approach, I encourage participation and questions from those that see it,” says Athanas. The gallery is 1½ miles east of Blissfield at 11993 East U.S. 223. The next Art Walk, 6 to 9 p.m. July 11, will feature Transcending Text, a show of work by Barbara F. Miner, associate professor in the art department at the University of Toledo; Barry Whittaker, assistant professor of new-media design practices at UT; Holly Hey, UT associate professor of film, and Lee Fearnside, assistant professor of art at Tiffin University. The show, in the Secor Gallery, 425 Jefferson Ave., will continue through July 31. The final Toledo Museum of Art program in a three-part series to engage participants in a deeper experience with the materials, methods, and concepts used by artists represented in Crossing Cultures: The Owen and Wagner Collection of Contemporary Aboriginal Australian Art from the Hood Museum of Art will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. A close-looking tour of Crossing Cultures will be followed by a discussion of the cultural and political issues raised by the works of art in the exhibition. Also at the museum, people with early-stage memory loss and their companions can explore American art from the colonial times through the 19th century Saturday at 1 p.m. Registration is requested but not required. Thirty portraits by 14 members of the Hyter Group, will be on view through Aug. 17 at Inside Angles Custom Framing Gallery, 6831 Angola Rd. in Holland.

A public reception with food, beverages, and music will be 6 to 8 p.m. July 12. People are also invited to attend an in-store session from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 3 when artists will paint a live model; an observation area will be available.
