Arts Commission wants to hear from the public

The Arts Commission is developing a strategic plan for arts and culture that will guide the events it plans in the years to come. It held several open meetings in 2013 and invites the public to additional sessions, including 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Collingwood Arts Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd., and 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Sophia Quintero Art & Culture Center, 1225 Broadway. People can also take a short online survey on the commission’s Web site. In the spring, a city-wide community meeting will be held. The commission last surveyed the public and wrote a plan in 2003. The goal is to support cultural vibrancy and economic revitalization, and to grow the network of creative life. Information: theartscommission.org and 419-254-2787.

● Voices and Visions, featuring new creations by Carrie Day and Casey Jex Smith, will open with a 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 10 reception in Launch Pad Cooperative, 911 Jefferson Ave. Day, who earned a 2011 bachelor of fine arts in 3-Dimensional Studies from Bowling Green State University, will display paintings and ceramics. Smith’s work encompasses drawing, collage, installation, and performance, and includes elements of fantasy gaming, religion, and abstraction. He’ll display drawings and video. The show will continue through Feb. 21. Launch Pad Cooperative, established in 2012, is an artist-run gallery for emerging visual artists and creative writers. Details: launchpadcooperative.com.

New Techniques in Fused Glass will be taught by Ellen Rubin in a 6 to 10 p.m. class Jan. 9 at her studio in Sylvania. Information: 419-666-0667.

● A reception for Boyd Hambleton’s new show, Lamplighters, with refreshments and live music, will be 7 to 10 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Gerber parlors of the Collingwood Arts Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. This over-18 show features photography that uses lamplight as its primary light source. ● Nature and floral paintings by Jim Dickens of Huron will be on view beginning with a 5 p.m. reception Sunday at Grace Episcopal Church, 315 Wayne St., Sandusky. The church will host a 4 p.m. concert before the reception. Dickens’ art will be on view through January. Information: 419-625-6919.

● New Techniques in Fused Glass will be taught by Ellen Rubin in a 6 to 10 p.m. class Jan. 9 in her studio in Sylvania. Rubin will demonstrate a variety of glass materials and processing machines. New or experienced participants can bring or begin projects, such as a ring dish, small bowl, necklace and earrings, jewelry pins, ornament, or 5-inch-by-7-inch wall hanging. ● Affecting the Audience: Anthony Discenza, Aurélien Froment, and Dora García opens Jan. 11 and continues through April 17 at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Three new-media works include A Viewing (The Effect) by Discenza, which immerses viewers in a seductive acoustic environment as they compile fragments of text online into a narration read aloud by a speaker. Froment’s film, Pulmo Marina, is a single image of a jellyfish in an aquarium and a voiceover speaking about the creature. Garcia, in Instant Narrative, turns visitors into the subjects as performers write a story about them in real time that’s projected in the same space. The show was organized by Rudolf Frieling, curator of media arts at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and focuses on the notion of performativity in contemporary art. The museum is at 525 S.
