Area is still reveling in Oscars-themed fun

Performers from ‘Hooray for Hollywood’ will be in town for one show at Stranahan Theater on Wednesday.

pair of Oscar-themed events are coming up to celebrate Academy Award season.

On Saturday the Toledo Jazz Orchestra will celebrate movie music for "Night at the Oscars," a concert featuring arrangements of songs by Count Basie, Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, and others that were used in movies. It will be at 8 p.m. at the Valentine Theatre.

Among the songs that will be played are "Over the Rainbow," "Moon River," "Secret Love," "Days of Wine and Roses," and "Evergreen." The concert will feature Rob Smith, trumpet soloist from Woody Herman's band, Mike Williams, lead trumpet of the Count Basie Orchestra, and Scott Lavender, music director and accompanist for Johnny Mathis. Vocalist Kelly Broadway also will perform.

The Toledo Junior Jazz Orchestra will welcome guests at 7:15 and will open the second half of the concert.

More than 50 years of Hollywood musical movies will be celebrated Wednesday in Hooray for Hollywood at the Stranahan Theater.

Classic film images will mix with singers and dancers to recreate some of the most memorable song and dance numbers. The song list includes "Singin' in the Rain," "Staying Alive," "All that Jazz," "Jailhouse Rock," and "My Heart Will Go On."
