Perrysburg Township plant to be idle for two weeks

DaimlerChrysler AG's machining plant in Perrysburg Township temporarily will lay off 800 hourly workers next week and 1,400 the week after as the automaker shuts down various vehicle-assembly plants to reduce inventories.

The machining plant, which has about 1,900 hourly workers, supplies steering columns and torque converters for almost all vehicles made by DaimlerChrysler's U.S. side. Many assembly plants are scheduled to be down for part of this month, including Toledo Jeep Assembly, which won't be making Jeep Cherokees and Wranglers the week of Dec. 18. All Chrysler plants are closed the week of Dec. 25.

Workers laid off from the machining plant are scheduled to return to work Jan. 2. About 120 were idled this week.
