Dundee engine plant called cost-saver

8/3/2004

The vehicle engine plant to be operated in Dundee, Mich., by DaimlerChrysler AG and two partners will save the firm $100 million a year and make its operations globally competitive, an executive said.

Speaking to a group of automotive executives at an industry convention this week in Traverse City, Mich., Bruce Coventry said the small four-cylinder gasoline engines will use a process that will maximize savings. The two-factory plant, operated by Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance, is a venture of Chrysler, Hyundai Motor Co., and Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

Global Engine expects to build 1.8 million to 2 million engines worldwide from five factories, including 840,00 from the two in Dundee.
