CAW president says GM cuts are an indication of what s to come
8/30/2007TORONTO Canadian Auto Workers President Buzz Hargrove says plans by General Motors Corp. to slash 1,000 jobs at an Ontario truck plant are a shocking indication of what s to come.
The automaker plans to cut one shift of production of Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks in Oshawa, Ontario.
That will reduce output to two shifts from three for the first time since the early 1990s.
Hargrove said he expects GM and the other U.S. automakers to continue downsizing and will ask the government to get involved to try to persuade the Detroit automaker not to make the cuts.
Hargrove said GM informed him of its plans to close the shift at a meeting on Wednesday.
