Fate of Chrysler-UAW contract still in question

10/24/2007

The fate of the tentative contract between the United Auto Workers and Chrysler LLC remained in question yesterday, with a union local in Detroit saying it approved the deal and officials awaiting tallies from four factories in Kokomo, Ind.

Six locals representing more than 11,000 workers have turned down the landmark pact; five locals representing about 8,200 workers have said yes.

The four-year agreement reached Oct. 10 covers 45,000 workers, but it has significant opposition.

If it fails, union bargainers will need to seek new terms with Chrysler, which was purchased this year by a private equity firm, Cerebus Capital Management LP.
