Chrysler offers buyouts at Detroit-area plants

1/29/2008

DETROIT Chrysler LLC said yesterday it is offering buyouts of up to $100,000 each to about 14,000 hourly workers at 12 of its Detroit-area facilities as part of its plan to eliminate up to 10,000 unionized jobs.

About 4,600 can opt for a more attractive retirement package.

A buyout offer was made this year at other plants, but signup ended last week at the Toledo Jeep Assembly complex.

The company does not disclose how many workers wanted the buyouts, Chrysler spokesman Michele Tinson said. Toledo Jeep has 3,400 hourly workers.

The Detroit-area buyout offers run through Feb. 18.
