Dundee engine plant may receive Fiat work

CHICAGO Chrysler LLC may produce 4-cylinder engines for Fiat SpA at a plant in Dundee, Mich., Chrysler product development chief Frank Klegon said during media previews yesterday before the Chicago Auto Show.

Chrysler agreed last month to give the Turin, Italy, automaker a 35 percent stake and access to its factories and U.S. dealers. Chrysler would gain small-car technology from Fiat in exchange. The deal is dependent on Chrysler getting a $3 billion federal government loan.

The Dundee plant is owned by Chrysler and operated by Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance LLC, which consists of Chrysler, Japan s Mitsubishi Motors Corp., and South Korea s Hyundai Motor Co. The factory makes 4-cylinder, 1.8 liter-displacement engines, larger than Fiat would require, Mr. Klegon said.
