Sales of Toledo-made SUVs continued to fall behind 2008 levels in August, as Chrysler Group LLC overall Tuesday reported a 15 percent decline in sales as compared to August, 2008.

Sales of the Jeep Wrangler declined 13 percent in August from a year ago to 5,613 units. Jeep Liberty sales were down 28 percent last month to 3,359 units and Dodge Nitro sales fell 24 percent to 1,510 units.

Through the first eight months of the year, sales of the Wrangler are flat at 59,043 units. Liberty sales were down 39 percent to 29,938 units and Nitro sales are off 55 percent to 12,510 units.

The three Toledo-built models failed to qualify for the government’s "Cash-for-Clunkers" incentive programs in most cases and did not reap the benefits of the wildly popular program as other models with higher mileage ratings did last month.
