Former GM landfill site in Toledo gets cleanup money
10/20/2010A former General Motors landfill site in Toledo is among dozens of sites in 14 states that will receive clean-up money from a $773 million trust established by the Obama administration.
The trust was proposed in May and the sites were revealed Wednesday, with the money coming from more than $1 billion provided by the Treasury Department to wind down the "bad" assets of GM set aside in the company's 2009 bankruptcy.
About two-thirds of the auto sites contain hazardous waste and will require an extensive cleanup.
What is identified as a GM Toledo landfill, at 1455 W. Alexis Rd. is to receive $2.6 million for operation and maintenance of a landfill cap and site evaluation.
Such sites in Ohio are to receive $39 million of the federal money, which also covers sites in Michigan, Indiana, and New York. Michigan has about half of the sites.
