Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz is recalling M-Class and ML models worldwide because of a defect with the vehicles’ cruise control system, Wolfgang Zanker, a spokesman for the Stuttgart, Germany-based carmaker said Tuesday by phone.

The defect, which forces drivers to brake to deactiviate the cruise control system, will be fixed in M-Class models built between August 1999 and July 2002 and ML550 AMG vehicles manufactured between August 1999 and June 2004, Zanker said. The repair for the defect, which hasn’t caused any accidents, takes about an hour, he said.
The recall affects nearly 140,000 vehicles in the United States and about 50,000 in Germany.
Mercedes is also recalling 57 E- and S-Class cars built in July last year, because of a defective vibration damper in the engine, Zanker said.
