STUTTGART, Germany — Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz is recalling M-Class and ML models worldwide because of a defect with the vehicles’ cruise control system, a spokesman said. The recall affects nearly 140,000 vehicles in the United States and about 50,000 in Germany.

The defect forces drivers to brake to deactivate the cruise control system. The recall affects M-Class models built between August, 1999, and July, 2002, and ML550 AMG vehicles manufactured between August, 1999, and June, 200.

Mercedes is also recalling 57 E-Class and S-Class cars built in July last year because of a defective vibration damper in the engine, the company said.
