BEIJING -- Dan Akerson, chairman of General Motors Co., said Monday that the automaker plans to expand its dealership network in China to 3,500 from 2,900 this year and nearly double production capacity, despite a slowdown in sales growth.

China is the world’s biggest auto market by vehicles sold but sales growth slowed to 2 percent in the latest quarter from 35 percent in 2010. Demand has been blunted by government controls aimed at slowing an overheated economy.

Mr. Akerson spoke with reporters during the Beijing auto show.
