A total of 172 employees of the paint facility at Chrysler Group LLC's Toledo Assembly complex will be laid off in August as the automaker takes over operation of the paint shop from a Michigan-based firm.

Gonzalez Contract Services Inc., which has a contract to provide employees for the paint shop, will lose that contract Dec. 31. It filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice in June that it plans to begin laying off 18 millwrights, 24 electricians, and 130 production workers Aug. 17 through Aug. 31.

Chrysler spokesman Jodi Tinson said that when the automaker begins management of the paint shop it expects to hire back many of the laid-off employees.
