DETROIT -- General Motors Co. says Tony Posawatz, 52, the engineer who oversaw the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid's development and production since 2006, has retired.

The company, the world's largest automaker by sales volume, isn't releasing a statement regarding his retirement, a spokesman said.

Mr. Posawatz's decision was made after GM Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson cut his sales forecast for the Volt.
