Detroit automakers report double-digit gains in August

All three Detroit automakers reported double-digit gains in August compared to last year as the entire industry enjoyed a better-than-expected month.

Chrysler Group LLC said its sales were up 14 percent over last year. Ford Motor Co. reported a 13 percent gain. General Motors Co. said its sales were up 10 percent. Sales of both Toledo-made Jeeps were up from last year. Chrysler reported Jeep Liberty sales of 7,886, a 15 percent increase from 2011. Sales of the Jeep Wrangler were up 3 percent to 13,293.

Kelley Blue Book has predicted overall sales of 1.27 million vehicles in August, which would be up nearly 19 percent from last year

All major automakers are expected to report August new car sales numbers today.
