Honda to build new hybrid Accord in Ohio
1/10/2013Honda will build a new hybrid version of its Accord sedan in Ohio, the automaker announced today.
The company plans to hire 50 people and invest $23 million at its Marysville plant to support the new vehicle, which is scheduled to go on sale this fall. A plug-in hybrid version of the Accord built in Japan will be available in some markets starting next week.
The Accord Hybrid Sedan will be the first hybrid Honda has built in Ohio and the third hybrid the company has manufactured in the Untied States. Honda currently builds the Civic Hybrid and Acura ILX Hybrid in Greensburg, Ind.
The company said it is adding about 95,000 square feet to its Marysville facility for the Accord Hybrid.
"With more than 30 years of continuously building eight generations of the Honda Accord close to our customers, our team now is using its experience and flexibility to add this sophisticated Accord Hybrid model," Marysville plant manager Jeff Tomko said in a statement. "At the same time, we are continuing with our commitment to manufacture new models in Ohio, along with the resulting growth in jobs."
The Accord was Honda's top selling model in the United States last year, with more than 331,000 sold.
Honda has invested more than $800 million in its Ohio manufacturing facilities in the last three years. The company employs more than 13,500 people in Ohio.
