On Monday, it was Burger King. Today it is Jeep.
Hackers apparently took control of @Jeep, the automaker's official, verified Twitter account today, posting a string of tweets that were profane, non-nonsensical, and occasionally referring to Cadillac.
“The official Twitter handle for the Jeep — Just Empty Every Pocket. Sold to Cadillac ... In a hood near you!” read the tagline on Jeep’s Twitter page.
It appears the first rogue tweets were sent about 1:30 p.m. Whoever took control of the account changed Jeep's bio information to indicate the Twitter handle had been sold to Cadillac.
A Chrysler spokesman said the social media agency that controls the account noticed the breach immediately and worked with Twitter to regain control of the account. By 3 p.m., the offending tweets had been deleted and Jeep had restored its bio and photos.
Jeep has more than 100,000 followers on Twitter.
On Monday, Burger King's Twitter account was hijacked, and falsely claimed that Burger King had been sold to McDonald's.
