Four area high school seniors will go to college for free after being recognized among the nation’s highest-achieving young golf caddies.
Toledo native Kyle Bueter and Holland native Daniel Cavese from St. Francis de Sales, Toledo’s Eric Momenee from St. John’s Jesuit, and Swanton’s Carly Truckor from Evergreen have been awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship by the Western Golf Association, which will cover full college tuition and housing for four years.
Founded by Hall of Fame amateur golfer Chick Evans, the scholarship has sent more than 9,000 caddies through college since 1930, with most honorees attending one of 14 colleges that have an Evans Scholarship House. Cavese, Momenee, and Truckor will attend Ohio State, while Bueter is headed to Miami (Ohio).
The four were nominated by their clubs — Cavese and Truckor caddie at Inverness, Bueter at Sylvania Country Club, and Momenee at Toledo Country Club — and selected based on their caddie record, academics, financial need, and character. In all, the WGA spends $12 million annually on scholarships for 840 caddies, making it the nation’s largest privately funded scholarship program that provides full tuition and housing. More than 100,000 golfers along with fund-raisers and sponsors support the program.
“This Evans Scholarship means everything to me and my family who have struggled financially these past few years,” said Cavese, who captained the St. Francis golf team. “I knew if I worked hard enough this was something I was capable of achieving. A huge burden has been lifted from my family.”
