BG women fall in OT in MAC final

BUFFALO - Miami beat Bowling Green 1-0 to win the Mid-American Conference's women's soccer championship on a goal by sophomore Danielle Berkemeier with just under seven minutes to play in the second overtime period.

The fourth-seeded RedHawks (11-7-0) received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The seventh-seeded Falcons finish the season at 10-10-1.

The winning goal came when Miami sophomore Katie Milligan connected on a pass to Berkemeier, who put the ball in the net.

BG's sophomore goalkeeper Erika Flanders kept the Falcons in the game with an unusually high 10 saves, while Laura Degelleke had six stops for the RedHawks.

Flanders was one of three Bowling Green players named to the all-tournament team. Joining her were junior defender Beth Wechsler and senior midfielder Stephanie Heller.

The top-seeded Falcons will play host Sunday to Kentucky, which defeated Marshall 1-0 in the other semifinal.

BG scored early, with the lone goal coming on a header by senior midfielder Gene Braxton only 2:46 into the game.

Two assists were awarded on the play, one for a corner kick from Adam Erhard and the other to Fred Degand, who headed Erhard's kick to Braxton.

Bowling Green goalkeeper Dave DeGraff was only called upon for three saves, while the Bulls' Brian Wozniak stopped six shots.

The Falcons advanced to the final for the sixth time in seven years, winning three titles and finishing second twice.
